Calculator
Dose and volume calculations for blood components in dogs and cats.
Estimated transfusion volume
Enter measured values. The result is an initial estimate for red cell products, not an automatic indication to transfuse.
How the calculation works
Volume (mL) = weight (kg) Γ factor (mL/kg) Γ (target Hct β current Hct) Γ· unit Hct
We use 90 mL/kg for dogs and 60 mL/kg for cats, the upper ends of MSD estimated ranges (80β90 and 40β60 mL/kg). Actual volume varies. Select weight and target for the patient and use the measured unit haematocrit. Reassess response and overload risk.
Educational use: product selection, volume and rate require individual veterinary assessment. Follow your service protocol and supplier instructions.
